Gunnar Westberg is a retired professor of medicine. He has been active in Physicians organisatiom for the prevention of nuclear war, IPPNW, since 1981, and was president of the organization 2004-8.
Today and every day at least 2000 nuclear weapons are ready for immediate launch, by intent or by mistake. “We have escaped total destruction either by sheer luck or, maybe, divine intervention” said General Lee Butler, chief commander of US nuclear forces 1991-4. This threat to the survival of mankind remains today.
The recently developed UN Convention prohibiting nuclear weapons will make nuclear weapons illegal, including the threat of use. The nuclear weapon states will not in the near future ratify the convention. We have learned from other conventions, e.g. against chemical weapons, landmines and cluster weapons that even countries who do not sign a convention tend gradually to abide by them. The “nuclear threshold” will be higher.
Swedish Doctors Against Nuclear Weapons is a two time Nobel Peace Prize winner; first in 1985 as a part of the World Federation of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), and in 2017 as a part of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). Swedish Doctors Against Nuclear Weapons aim to spread knowledge about the nuclear effects of nuclear weapons and to contribute to this knowledge through scientific research. The goal is to strengthen the opinion of nuclear weapons so that nuclear warfare is prevented.
